Over the past few days, a number of interesting stories relating to comic book and superhero films have hit the web. We have a pair of DC related stories, as well as a Marvel related story (one that actually ties into DC as well). It’s largely all good news too, which is always a pleasure. Sure, many may not find this sort of genre to be high art, but the movies are damn fun, so it’s well worth covering. The flicks in question range from just about to be released to in development, so there’s a nice gamut being tackled here. If you like superheroes, it’s a good day. Anyway, enough set up…on to the good stuff!
First up, we have James Gunn returning to the next Guardians of the Galaxy project. If you remember, about a year ago, he was fired after offensive tweets surfaced, dug up by online trolls. No one has wanted to take over the sequel from him, especially with Marvel still using his script. Well, apparently, months ago Gunn’s apologies were excepted and the MCU welcomed him back, though the news was only confirmed yesterday. Gunn is currently working for DC on The Suicide Squad, a reboot/sequel to Suicide Squad, so once he gets that made, he’ll head on back to party with the Guardians.
Next, Ezra Miller is so dedicated to making a Flash movie happen, he’s actually writing his own screenplay. As we see The Flash linger in development hell, his deal to play the part is winding down, so this is perhaps a final bid to remain with the character. We’ll see how DC and Warner Brothers like his take, but this could be an interesting development to take note of…
Finally, I wanted to share some Shazam! reviews, since the film is getting some really great early reactions. Here are a few:
#Shazam is a super-powered BIG & I LOVED every second of it. A colorful, vibrant, vital addition to the DCEU. Vivid character-driven action, heartrending central relationships & fully earned, totally satisfying emotional moments. Super hilarious. Super thrilling. Super awesome! pic.twitter.com/KelHZ5YzFq

#Shazam is parts Home Alone, parts Big, a crowd pleasing family-friendly joy-filled wish-fulfillment superhero film which gets a bit over the top and cheesy at times. It’s fun and funny, and I was surprised at how much it wears it’s heart on its sleeve.

#Shazam is an absolute delight! Super vibrant, tons of heart & a great fun-loving vibe. The family element is a big charmer & so is the humor that comes with watching @ZacharyLevi explore his new powers. Said this after IT but it’s worth repeating – @Jgrazerofficial is a star.

Shazam! is another win for DC. Sure, the humor & action you’d expect from a superhero film are there, but #ShazamMovie stands out because of the emotional, family story at its center. I had some small issues with the hero/villain aspects but the family stuff is dynamic & powerful pic.twitter.com/FYM3QVp5hu

Finally allowed to say that #Shazam was fantastic! Full of heart and pure childhood wish fulfillment. It’s funny and the tone is exactly right. @zacharylevi is perfect in the role, and so is @asherangel, who I’m convinced is @maisie_williams‘ brother! pic.twitter.com/DXhp2ZBteR

Just got out of #SHAZAM, which is a joyful wish fulfillment fantasy in the “Big” tradition that has just enough edge and a perfect helping of self-aware humor. Great fun! Certain former DC movie directors can learn a thing or two about how to stage a superhero battle from this… pic.twitter.com/avWMSywaby

#SHAZAM is a good deal of fun. Has many a funny moment and is surprisingly freaky/scary several times. Not for the little ones, but big kids will find much to enjoy. @ZacharyLevi is perfect casting and @Jgrazerofficial steals the show
